Decorative Applied Arts (Potter’s Art)

Highlighting the importance of preserving national values, SAFAA strives to create something new through the application of traditional teaching methods to raise the reputation and awareness of Armenian culture all over the world. SAFAA offers bachelor and master programmes in Potter’s Art preparing highly qualified specialists with bright ideas.

 

 

Work in the Laboratories

 

Students of Bachelor programme in Potter’s Art have the opportunity to work both in the classrooms and studios as well as other profession-based institutions. These are the places where student start to work on their projects and use the gained knowledge and skills in practice.

 

During the study process the students visit employers getting acquainted with the working environment and processes.

Bachelor Programme (4 years, 240 ECTS)

 

The mission of Bachelor academic programme in Potter’s Art is to prepare highly qualified specialists in the field of applied arts competitive in national and international levels who will have their input in the production of applied arts sphere, particularly in the fields of pottery and production contributing to the growth of national culture and economy as well as raise of aesthetic taste of the society.

 

 

Learning Outcomes

 

Upon successful completion of bachelor programme in Potter’s Art the graduate must:

 

1. Demonstrate knowledge on the theories and methods of history of art and pottery and advanced knowledge in creating various works of pottery and accomplishing tasks.

 

2. Demonstrate skills of applying old and modern techniques and technologies existing in the field of applied arts, through which he/she will implement creative projects proposing new methods and approaches.

 

3. Demonstrate skills of introducing works of pottery to the professional and non-professional public orally and in written form.

 

4. Be proficient in applying various modern software tools to accomplish different professional tasks in Potter’s Art which will enable him/her to put the accomplished work in different environments and present it using new Information and Communication Technologies.

 

5. Put creative-performance skills in any pottery work demonstrating abilities of analytical and critical thinking, as well as those of proposing alternative solutions and evaluating results.

 

6. Design and develop sketches of pottery and glass art works applying compositional principles and rules, light and volume methods, the right way of installation, problems of scale balancing and basics of aesthetics, taking into consideration the physical, mental, cultural, social and human factors affecting the advancement of innovation, performance and creativity in pottery.

 

7. Develop and reproduce creative projects and new ideas, maintaining the entire technical and technological process through works of pottery, applying the methods of making clay mass, proper drying, firing methods, slip painting (engobe), glazing and on-glazing.

 

8. Be able to make independent decisions in an individual or team work, as well as work effectively in a team.

 

9. Evolve full professional activities maintaining the national cultural values; be responsible for the individual work that will bear ancient cultural values in an innovative approach.

 

 

Academic Environment

 

SAFAA ensures a working environment for students that enables the development of their professional and creative abilities. Students of Potter’s Art programme are actively involved in the SAFAA activities.

 

In order to effectively implement the bachelor programme in Decorative Applied Arts (Potter’s Art), the teaching is organised in auditoriums, laboratories, as well as in other profession-related institutions.

 

A big importance is attached to the student’s individual work as the best mode of his/her studies contributing to the acquisition of required knowledge and skills. Individual approach to each student prevails in the academic programme.

 

By adopting active and interactive methods of teaching and learning, a great importance is attached to the inclusive approach in the academic programme thus ensuring equal and impartial conditions of teaching and learning for all students.

 

 

Curriculum (2021-2022 ac. year)

 

The combination of traditional and modern approaches and methods of teaching and learning of Potter’s Art academic programme enables the students to acquire comprehensive knowledge on the reasearch theme as well as develop relevant skills to pass to the next degree of education as well as be introduced in the market as specialist of the field.

 

 

I year

 

The first study year is designed to familiarize the stduents with the content of the specialty enabling them to obtain basic theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in Potter’s Art.

 

 

II year

 

The second study year is intended to deepen and develop previously gained knowledge as well as shape and master the technical and professional abilities of students. The latter will be able to design sketches of decorative round sculpture and mosaics as well as do the assignments applying fine arts refinement, the methods of preparing round sculptures, various methods of mosaics, engobe, glaze, drying and firing.

 

 

III year

 

The third year will train the students’ abilities as team memeber. This year they will aqcuire analytical and research knolwdge important for the ceramist and will be able to use all the toolkit necessary for that.

 

This level will enable students to be integrated in the working environment and work on the projects coming out of the real market demands.

 

 

IV year

 

In the 4th year the students will work on the final paper priorly set and assigned that will be guided by a superviser. In the final year the students will implement their final project taking into consideration all the stages important and necessary for the work.

Optional Courses

 

Starting from the 2nd semester of the 2nd study year, all the students of the academic programme can choose courses of deep professional or related fields that will develop their skills and abilities comprehensively and typical to the field.
